1968 Ford SHELBY GT 500KR
A LITTLE HISTORY
The Shelby Mustang is the ultimate asphalt
warrior from the blue oval stable.
Ford, with assistance from Carroll Shelby,
put forward 'the next hot item in the street
wars' with the 1968 Shelby GT500 KR Cobra
Jet. The mean and powerful look was achieved
by Shelby American through body modifications
including extending the front end by three
inches, adding a fiberglass hood with fully
functioning dual front scoops and hot air
extraction vents. It had a brand-new version
of the 428 Police Interceptor engine fitted
with improved-breathing heads and larger
exhaust manifolds giving birth to the 428 CJ.
The GT500 KR or "King of the Road" powered by
a pavement eating Cobra Jet 428 engine was
deviously rated at only 335 horsepower when
in fact, it pumped out at least 400
horsepower. Powerful enough to send the GT500
KR from 0 to 60 mph in only 6.9 seconds with
a 103-mph quarter-mile speed. Additionally,
the KR had larger brakes, under-hood
suspension bracing, and staggered rear shocks
to reduce axle wind-up and wheel hop. At the
time, Car Life magazine said “The car is so
impressive, so intimidating to challengers,
that there are no challengers”. Limited
production and awesome power makes the 1968
GT500 KR one of the most collectible ’Stangs
of all time.
