Now that the cruising season is coming to an end, you’ll probably be seeing plenty of ads for classic cars for sale. It’s very common this time of year, and it’s a great time for classic car buyers to make a great deal. However, you do want to be sure you do your homework prior to making a purchase. Here are a few things you should check before you consider adding a car to your growing collection.

1. Check all paperwork – You’d be amazed how many scams are out there, but VIN numbers will tell the entire story. Be sure to check all paperwork carefully, and compare the VIN numbers on everything. If you come across a discrepancy, you can avoid getting a bad deal, or even buying an illegal car.

2. Ask about the restoration history – Any classic car owner knows that when you take on a restoration project you need to document it. Ask to see pictures of a car’s restoration so you have real proof of the work that’s been done.

3. Check service history – If an owner tells you a car has been maintained well, he or she should be able to provide documentation of that. Ask for receipts for oil changes and any other car maintenance that’s been done.
