*1970 Ford Mustang Sports Roof R-Code*What has always set the Mustang apart from other cars is the ability to customize it in so many ways on the order form at the dealership. With multiple body styles, engine options, styling package and transmission choices, if you had the money, you could build a car that was uniquely yours- and that is exactly what the original owner of this 1970 Sportsroof Super Cobra Jet did. According to the Deluxe Marti Report that is included with the car, out of 191,522 Mustangs built in 1970, this is a one of one built with these select options.The Sportroof body was a new name for the classic Fastback which appeared in the Mustang lineup for 1969 and is perhaps the most aggressive, muscle car style bodywork to ever come on a Mustang. This example is finished in a very nice period color of Lime Metallic and features color matched steel wheels with dog dish Corporate hubcaps that have no trim ring. A cool aspect of this car is that it was clearly optioned to be a sleeper from the factory- on the outside, it looks like a pretty normal Mustang save for the black hood stripe, Ram Air hood and rear wing. But when you open the hood, that is where this car gets really interesting.With 6 engine options available for the 1970 Mustang, only 249 were sold with the 428 cubic inch Super Cobra Jet V8 paired to a close ratio 4-speed manual transmission. When combined with the Drag Pack like this car has, those three options alone added more than a 25% premium to the original cost of the car, but to the discerning buyer, were well worth the cost. By optioning the Drag Package, the car received an external oil cooler as well as a locking rear differential with 3.91 gears and turned a standard Cobra Jet V8 into a Super Cobra Jet. The additions that came on the Super Cobra Jet were significant over the standard Cobra Jet and included an upgraded crank, pistons and rods that were based on those found in Ford\'s LeMans tested 427ci V8 as well as a re-balanced flywheel, flexplate and harmonic balancer. Although the names of the two engines are very similar, internally they are so significantly different that parts can not be shared between the two motors. Although the numbers matching original engine and transmission are no longer in the car, exact replacements have taken their place which gives the owner more freedom to enjoy the car without fear of damaging the original pieces. When you consider the cost at the time to add these options on to a new Mustang, it becomes clear that the original owner was a proper performance enthusiast who knew all of the tricks to end up with one of the fastest drag cars available from the factory at the time.Likely in an effort to keep the weight down, the interior is rather spartan and features little more than an AM radio, Hurst T-handle shifter and White Rhino vinyl seats. In front of the driver sits a suite of gauges that are clearly visible through the two spoke steering wheel. This car was restored in the mid-late 1990s to an exceptionally high level and you could be fooled into thinking that it came out of the restoration shop just a few weeks ago. The upholstery is tight and shows minimal signs of usage and the exterior presents just as well all the way around the car.To show just how unique this Mustang is, in September of 1999 it was featured in the enthusiast magazine Mustangs and Fords where it was shown off shortly after the completion of its restoration. Anybody with enough time and money can build a car and claim that it is a true one of one example- but finding a car factory specified as the only one ever produced is a true rarity. Having those claims backed up by a Marti Report solidifies its place as a true collector grade car.
