Description:1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL Convertible Sleek but square best describes the 60\'s Galaxies which were the full sized Fords, generally consumer oriented commuter cars. But engineers realized the potential by lowering the weight and increasing the engine size, constantly fiddling with cars behind the scenes to create fast, often legendary drag cars. For consignment, a more pedestrian oriented version of a \'64 Galaxie 500 XL convertible. This would have been top of the line even as fastbacks were more common, and this is a fantastic car that\'s been garage kept by our long term owner since at least 1998 and is straight, clean, and eager to orbit in a new owner\'s garage. Exterior Raven Black beautifully covers this car, accented by a side spear that contains the script emblem on the front fender, tapering back to a stylized, space age emblem on the back. The dramatic elongated rear section and fender skirts aid in giving this car the sleek descriptive, preceded by a sculpted, narrow grille and quad headlights. The chrome bumpers and other metal work are in good condition but are showing imperfections, including minor bubbling, cracking, scratches. Meanwhile, the black canvas soft top shows a bit of age along with some seam separation and tearing, but its glass window is intact. The tail is appropriately jet inspired with a pair of round afterburners as taillights, common in Ford lineup of the era. Exhaust tips exit symmetrically under the lights and 14-inch wheels have XL hubcaps. Interior Beautifully sculpted door panels include courtesy lights which appear here as part of the XL package. Aluminum inserts on vinyl backing with differing patterns and textures are all in great condition. The front bucket seats are low backed and black with white piping. We note some softening of the driver\'s side while the passenger seat and its shell look to be in good shape. The rear seats which dip in the center back to allow a Galaxie emblem which is also the rear seat speaker in good condition. An ashtray and window crank are provided for each rear passenger. A black rimmed steering wheel with horn ring has an XL emblem and the dash is a model of 60\'s era simplicity and more jet inspired design. The factory AM radio is in place and has been retrofitted with FM capabilities situated next to an analog clock. A striated center console houses the simple shifter in molded plastic and a topped storage bin. The black loop style carpet is in great shape as is the trunk which has a fitted mat and spare tire. Drivetrain A 352ci V8 is under the Raven Black hood and is rated at 250 horsepower. It sports a 4-barrel carburetor and a Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission. The Ford 9 rear axle contains 3.00 TracLok gears...gotta love how they named things in bygone eras! Meanwhile, power drum brakes occupy the front and back. Undercarriage Essentially driver quality underneath with just hints of surface rust in areas. The dual exhaust makes a beeline for the back where they meet a pair of glasspack style mufflers before exiting through chrome tips. We note oil on the rear differential, the oil pan and some oil drift on the frame in front. Independent coil spring suspension is in front and leaf springs are in the back. Everything looks solid with no invasive rust seen anywhere. Drive-Ability What a cool ride! We prime the four barrel and the car starts up without complaint, idles nicely, and rolls smoothly onto our tarmac for a quick review. It\'s wide and low and we can just imagine cruising with the top down so with the flick of a switch we went topless. Plenty of horsepower and comfort and a smile inducing A+ on the functionality test. Everything seems to be in good working order. A Ford Galaxie 500 appeared in Kojak, I-Spy, That Darn Cat!, and hundreds of other TV shows and films. And so, to some of us, they\'re as familiar as an old friend. We love the looks and vibes this car puts out. He
