A sleek,sexy shape was backed up by mechanicals that could deliver on the promise of the sexy bodywork.Available as a Berlinetta 9Coupe), GTS (Targa),or Spyder(Convertible),the F355 was the pinnacle of many enthusiast aspirations throughout the late 1990's Ferrari made an F-1style shifting mechanism available for the F355 in 1998. For a $9,500 premium over the manual transmissin model the shift lever was replaced by a small toggle switch on the console used to engage reverse gear,and two paddles extending from either side of the steering wheel. Pull the right one and the manual gearbox was shifted up electronically faster than most mere humans could accomplish the feat. Pull the left paddle and a downshift was over so fast you had to listen closely to hear the engine being blipped for the perfect match of the syncromesh. Pull both paddles towards you and neutral was selected.This proved to be a very popular option with a high as 90% of F355s being ordered this way in traffic-congested cities.
