FOR SALE: 1961 Impala mild custom
PRICE REDUCED 20K
1961 Impala bubbletop mild custom. Many hours of body, paint, fabrication, and upholstery work, have reaped high dividends in this show-stopping cruiser.
This car is the result of an artist/car-enthusiast with more dollars than sense and plenty of capable family and friends that were more than happy to spend his money on building his dream car.
This Impala was pulled off the frame and completely stripped and the metal was massaged to make way for the uniquely-flamed paint job. The two-tone PPG paint consists of Silver Birch Metallic under the candy orange custom flame design which lays over a marbleized pattern. There are approximately 22-24 layers of material to achieve this effect. Pull it into the sun and it's like someone flipped a switch!
Some of the chrome has been shaved including the door handles to achieve a slippery appearance. The chrome that is on the car has been polished or rechromed and all the rubber/weatherstripping/gaskets are new.
This car has been completely rewired with all new components. Headlights are halogen and the taillights are red LED under all white lens. Did you see the episode of American Hotrod when they built another 61? Well, the custom grill that they designed for that car was one of a kind, and then they fired the guy who programmed it on the water jet and lost the file for the program. I called them up and bugged them to cut me that same grill. Two weeks later they found the file and cut a grill for me. Now this 61 has the 2nd Boyd 61 impala grill. I then designed a second smaller grill and installed it in place of the front license plate cutout and then stuck a pair of Piaa offroad running lights behind it. The dual exhaust tips on the end of the flowmasters are also custom and one of a kind. The wheels are 18x8 and 18x10 Boyd "Harm" wrapped in Toyo Proxes T1R and they're mounted on 2" drop spindles.
The interior is, again, unique. Light gray micro-fiber faux swede with metallic orange trim and buttons, with seatbelts for 6. The interior door and quarter panels have sculpted flames that match the exterior flames design--also in the faux swede. I almost forgot the flawless faux-swede headliner. You just can't beat this faux swede. It cleans up better than the real thing and you can't feel or see that it's any different than the real thing.
All new Autometer guages with rebuilt and customized stock speedometer. The steering column is from ididit and the steering wheel is a leather half-wrap from Budnik entitled 'Sweep' which happens to compliment the Boyd rims. A King-cool heating and AC system from Airtique takes care of the cabin temperature. The stereo, with remote, is Alpine and the speakers are Punch.
If you're looking for the amp, you'll find it in the completely upholstered trunk that is done in the same suede and flame theme. The trunk is home to the Directed Amp that has been airbrushed and pinstriped to match the exterior paint. The trunk also hides the air bag systems compressor and tank.
Yup, it's bagged all around so it can be dropped right down in the weeds. All four corners also sport SSBC disc brakes with tubular A-arms for the front. The steering has been converted over to a 605 steering box. The rearend is posi-trac with 308 gears for easy freeway driving.
The engine compartment is home to the well-dressed 383 cu crate motor that cranks out 440 hp and has around 200 miles on it. Also new is the fresh T-350 tranny with kevlar bands and Corvette 2nd gear.
The compartment also houses a new hi-efficiency radiator, Electric fan, March serpentine system, ceramic coated Sanderson headers, new battery, and HEI ingnition system. Even the fuel tank was removed, stripped, resealed, recoated and reinstalled with new straps.
I had intended to keep the car forever but it turned out too nice and I hardly get to drive it since I live in western Washington state where we have 2 seasons; Winter and August. Also, I don't have the space for it and life is going in a different direction. The car drives really nice, runs great and is comfortable. It's not perfect but it's close and it always gets attention. A picture of this Impala can be seen in the December 2007 issue of the Good Guys Gazette on page 161. I have tons of receipts and I've tried to save them all. Anyone who has experience in restoration and customizing will understand when I say that I have more money in this car than what it's appraised for or will ever get out of it. See more pictures at:
