Most Wanted Classic Cars: Mercury Cougar (Part 2)
Posted by Steve White on Mar 12, 2010In 1969, the Mercury Cougar became heavier, longer, and wider, and it was offered in the forms of two-door hardtop and convertible. The 289 cid V8 engine was no longer available, and the 302 cid V8 became the standard engine. Other engine options included two versions of 351 cid V8, the 390 cid V8, and the new 428 cid Cobra Jet V8. Mercury also introduced the Eliminator package to bring the performance of Cougar to a whole new level.
The Cougar underwent considerable restyling in 1970, and it became even larger than the previous year. A new engine was also offered to give car buyers more performance options, and it came in the form of the 429 cid V8 with Ram-Air induction, which was rated at 375 hp. Realizing that the muscle car era was coming to an end, Mercury decided to transform the Cougar into a luxury vehicle, and this resulted in a larger wheelbase. Only two engine options were available in 1971, and they were the 351 cid V8 and the 429 cid V8. The following year, all Cougars were fitted with the 351 cid V8, which came in three different versions.
The Mercury Cougar was no longer offered as a pony car after 1973. However, Mercury continued to use its name on other models, including sport coupes and station wagons.
