FOR SALE: 1981 AMC Concord
The final American design from the company called American Motors Corporation, or AMC, was the Concord. This 1981 Concord wagon is a nice footnote to automotive history, demonstrating AMC\'s desire to move up-market without forgetting their past. I\'d argue it\'s the coolest machine to roll out of their factories since the 1970 Rebel Machine, and probably the last AMC that will ever be considered collectable. There are plenty of wagons out there with wood on the sides, but when, exactly, was the last time you saw one of these so nicely preserved? Where I come from, they rusted away quickly in the winter snow and slush, but this one has been hiding down south where the sun is warm and the roads are dry. As a result, it\'s mellowed into a \"so weird it\'s cool\" kind of machine, complete with hand-painted pinstripes on the Olympic White factory paint. Build quality and finish work are par for the course in 1981, and the Concord has a somewhat look that was both functional and even a little futuristic. Think Jeep Cherokee meets \"Space: 1999.\" All the trim and brightwork is in astoundingly good condition, and yes, you can actually strap things onto that roof rack without damaging the car. AMC designers called the interior \"Nutmeg\" and it does a great job of moving the brand up-market. Bucket seats, surprisingly high-quality materials, and a lot of standard features were all a part of the Concord\'s appeal. The velour front buckets are in excellent condition, particularly considering their age, and things like the carpet show some signs of UV exposure, but certainly no damage. Instrumentation is basic (dig the digital clock!), but at least they included a temperature gauge to help out a little bit. The original AM/FM radio remains in the faux burled walnut dash, right above the climate controls, which include factory A/C. Under the fastback rear hatch, there\'s a commodious cargo bay that looks fantastic with its polished stainless steel runners and full carpet set. Built for comfort rather than speed, the 258 cubic inch inline-six is nonetheless a torquey powerplant that moves the compact wagon easily. Its smooth and effortless feel is exactly what the engineers were aiming for when they designed the car, and thanks to tidy proportions and a modest curb weight, performance is energetic around town and highway cruising is serene. It\'s also shockingly clean under the hood, with nice detailing throughout, from the AMC Turquoise paint on the engine itself, to the hardware that looks like it just came out of the bin at the factory-there\'s zero rust anywhere on this car! The chassis is equally clean, with a front suspension that has been tweaked to give the car just a bit of a rake-perfect for those lovely Salt Flat alloys and 17-inch radials. A cool hauler that will make a lot of people smile, and you\'ll definitely never see another one at a show. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Charlotte showroom.
