1978 was the Corvettes 25th anniversary, and in celebration and recognition, was offered the official Pace Car position of the Indianapolis 500. This was also the 62nd running of the Indianapolis 500.
Chevrolet produced two special edition Corvettes, one being a Pace Car appearance edition and the other a special silver anniversary paint package. The silver anniversary paint package was a 399.00 option of which 15,283 were produced. 6,502 Corvettes were Pace Car editions and delivered to showrooms, one for each Chevrolet dealership. The price of the Pace Car edition was 13,650.00 while the base model sold for 9,350.00. The L48 engine was standard with the L82 optional.
With the optional L82 205-hp engine, the Corvette could charge to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds.
May 28, 1978 - Twenty-five years after its introduction to the American public, the Chevrolet Corvette was chosen to pace the Indy 500 for the first time. The car was provided with a unique black-and-silver two-tone paint scheme with colorful graphics added. Replica cars were identically painted, and proved to be high desirable, 6,502 replicas were ultimately sold.
The 1978 Chevrolet Corvette L82 finished in correct silver over leather Oyster interior was offered for sale at the 2006 Worldwide Group Auction held on Hilton Head Island where it was expected to sell between 18,000.00-28,000.00. It was one of the few vehicles of the day to be offered without reserve. It is equipped with a 350 cubic-inch overhead valve V8 engine that produces 220 horsepower. It is matted to a four-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to the rear wheels. There are four-wheel disc brakes on all four wheels.
In 1978 there were over 40,000 examples of the Corvette produced. 12,739 were outfitted with the L82 high output engine with 3,385 of those fitted with the Muncie four-speed gearbox. This vehicle is one of those 3,385. Its first owner ordered the car with power brakes, power windows, air conditioning, and the leather interior. At the conclusion of the sale the vehicle had found a new home at the selling price of 17,900.00.

The new V8 was backed with a three-speed manual transmission, this was done by Arkus-Duntov, and became the single most important modification in the history of the car. This took the Corvette from a two seat vehicle to a genuine performer. For his role in the modification, Zora received the inaccurate nickname Father of the Corvette.
