FOR SALE: 1969 Mercury Cougar

Far more than just a larger, more luxurious Mustang, this 1969 Mercury Cougar XR7 was a top-of-the-line personal luxury car that delivered comfort and performance in equal doses. If you were too young for a stodgy Lincoln, but wanted to show the world you\'d arrived, the Cougar was your #1 choice, then and now. This particular XR7 has been restored to match the door tag\'s specifications, and that means cool Medium Gold Metallic paint that\'s the perfect \'60s touch. The Cougar\'s sleek lines, hidden headlights, and lack of a vinyl roof make this one look especially pleasing, and the high-quality workmanship doesn\'t hurt, either. The bodywork is quite straight, and the character line that stretches from the headlights to the rear wheelwells is crisp and sharp, indicative of someone taking their time with the sandpaper. Good caps, solid rockers and quarters, and a brilliant shine make this a car that people stop to examine more closely. The Cougar also got a cool grille that seamlessly blends with the headlight doors, and out back a matching set of taillights flash sequentially, a Mercury tradition. All the chrome and stainless is nicely finished, and it\'s always nice to see an unusual car without any deviations from stock. Mercury called the interior Light Nugget Gold, and it really works well with the gold bodywork. For the \'60s, it\'s stylish and restrained, giving the interior an upscale atmosphere that holds on to its pony car roots. Bucket seats flank a handsome restored center console, and even Ford wasn\'t immune to the aircraft influences that were all the rage back then, using rocker switches in the center of the dash for secondary controls. The gauges appear to be original, and are fitted into a handsome dash with a moderately convincing burled walnut applique, and the only real deviation from factory stock is the AM/FM radio in the center stack. You\'ll also note factory A/C, which is still fully functional and blows ice cold, and the trunk offers a new mat and matching full-sized spare. For luxury purposes, it\'s hard to beat Ford\'s 351 Windsor V8, which makes smooth power and plenty of torque to move the luxurious Cougar with effortless ease. Nicely detailed, it\'s still completely stock, so this isn\'t some guy\'s idea of a Cougar hot rod, but an authentic experience that\'s still a first-class ticket. Ford Blue engine paint, a stock air cleaner, and that big A/C compressor dominate the engine bay, and aside from a few easy-to-correct details like the radiator hoses, it\'s just about ready for show. It\'s linked to a 3-speed Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission and a set of 2.75 gears in the 9-inch out back, so highway cruising is effortless and surprisingly economical. Handsome Mercury sport wheels give it a bit of an edge, and wear fat 215/70/14 BFGoodrich radials. Just a little bit out of the ordinary, this Cougar represents a great combination of Mercury performance and luxury and is a sure-fire future collectable. Call today!
