FOR SALE: 1968 Mercury Cougar
Another stunning Mercury, this time a 1968 Cougar XR7-G, one of only 619 built and offer 100% matching numbers and astunning restoration by KTL Restorations. If you\'re not a Mercury fan, you might be wondering \"What\'s an XR7-G?\" Well, in 1968, with all the other muscle car showrooms filling up with tuner specials (Shelby, Yenko, etc.), Mercury wanted to get in on the act. Dan Gurney was asked (and politely declined) to build a special Mercury, but the big cat division pressed forward, taking Gurney\'s initial and creating a luxury-oriented special edition Cougar that would truly stand out from the crowd. Special touches include the custom front valence with Lucas fog lights, interior upgrades, special badging, and a sunroof. The restoration is concours-grade, with better-than-new fit and finish to the bodywork and panels that fit so exactly it must have taken hours to get it right. Mercury\'s Sea Foam Green was faithfully reproduced in two-stage urethane, but it\'s a subtle color that isn\'t as loud as its \'50s counterparts. Combined with the XR7-G\'s custom hood and standard black vinyl top, it cuts a dashing profile and perfectly epitomizes Mercury\'s luxury/performance image. All the chrome was completely restored, and a country-wide search for rare NOS parts was part of the restoration process to ensure it\'s as accurate as possible. In person, it\'s unlikely that you\'ve seen a Cougar this nice and will simply blow your socks off. The interior got a lot of upgrades, too, including special gold Cougar badges, a wood shift knob, leather-trimmed door pulls, and a console with special switches for both the fog lamps and sunroof. Like the exterior, the interior has been restored to compete at the highest levels, so materials, patterns, and workmanship are exacting, and though this one has been driven a bit, it doesn\'t show. The original dashboard was refinished, the gauges rebuilt, and even the Rally clock and AM radio are fully functional. The trunk features a correct mat and full-sized spare tire, which might be the only inaccurate component on the entire car. Power comes from the original, numbers-matching 302 cubic inch V8 topped by a 4-barrel carburetor. Highly detailed, it wears all the proper hardware, plus reproduction tags and decals, and the restoration team carefully documented the car prior to disassembly so all the factory markings could be replicated. The big A/C compressor dominates the engine bay, and the torquey V8 is the ideal choice for the Cougar: smooth, but with a bit of a snarl. It\'s backed by a C4 3-speed automatic and 9-inch rear with 3.00 gears. The floors are finished with the right amount of overspray, the components offer correct colors and markings, and, well, it\'s just as nice as cars can get. Even the styled steel wheels wear special XR7-G center caps, faithfully reproduced. Built on the same assembly line as Shelbys and California Specials, it\'s Mercury\'s entry into that rarefied world.Call us today for all the details on this remarkable car.
