FOR SALE: 1967 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

This smooth silver bullet started life as a 1967 Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia that spent the past 30 or so years in the care of the same family. So when the time came to freshen the VW, there were major changes in store. It takes the smooth shape and gives it a modern twist so that it\'s both instantly recognizable and something truly unique. The list of body modifications is brief but the effect they have on the overall look is stunning. Perhaps the most notable change is the addition of what appear to be Porsche 911 headlights grafted neatly into the Karmann-Ghia\'s front fenders. The angle is right and they fit so well you almost think they were born there. They also shaved the bumpers, door handles, and grilles on the nose, as well as all the badging, so it has a very sleek, clean look overall. Silver paint suits the car\'s custom look, adding a high-tech vibe that makes it stand out without being too overt about it, and the quality of the work is pretty impressive. Gaps are even, the paint has an awesome gloss, and the blacked-out trim around the windows works well with the other details like the smoked taillight lenses. And like all great customs, it\'s hard to tell where the factory work stops and the custom stuff begins. That\'s cool. The interior is a little less radical but still quite effective. The bucket seats have a cool \'60s style to them and the upgrades that are here are tasteful and carry that same vibe. The black upholstery is in excellent condition, and includes new door panels that fit well and carry contrasting silver stripes. The original basic gauges are gone, replaced by elegant Auto Meter white-faced dials that give you a much more comprehensive look at the mechanicals than the factory stuff. The fat leather-wrapped steering wheel telegraphs the front suspension\'s activities directly to your fingertips and an EMPI T-handle shifter is a muscle car touch that oddly doesn\'t seem out of place in this VW. That reshaped nose still has a usefully-shaped trunk area, as well as a concealed gas filler cap that helps smooth the outer flanks. The engine is a pretty stout 1800 cc unit borrowed from a mid-70s VW bus and built up to the tune of 136 horsepower. Now that may not seem like a lot, but bear in mind that this sucker weighs in around 1800 pounds and you can understand that performance is, shall we say, entertaining. Featuring dual carbs, a body-colored fan shroud, and a few chrome dress-up pieces, the engine bay looks cool enough to show off every time you go to a show. It also runs superbly, pulling strongly through all four gears and with the Karmann-Ghia\'s lower center of gravity, handling is much improved. Some of the credit for that improvement should go to a custom tubular front cross-member and 3-inch drop spindles to really get it low, and there are 4-wheel disc brakes to keep everything in check. A ceramic-coated exhaust sounds distinctive and looks great peeking out from under the bodywork and it rolls on polished Minilite-style wheels and fat 195/50/15 Hankook radials. This is a neat car that\'s not for everyone but if you\'re a VW fan looking for something a little outside of the ordinary, this Karmann-Ghia has an awful lot to offer. Call today!
