FOR SALE: 1964 Chevrolet Impala
1964 Chevrolet Impala The 1964 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport was promoted in 1964 from a trim option to its own model. Coupled with a facelift over the 1963 models that gave the Impala a squared-off and more masculine look, SS sales exceeded 1963 production by more than 30,000 units. The Impala SS equipped with 409-cubic-inch V-8 had become legendary following the release of the Beach Boys ode to the performance car with the 1962 song 409.
The Super Sport performance option debuted on the 1961 Chevy Impala, and with each succeeding year the Impala SS grew in popularity and sparked the 1960s muscle-car wars that pitted the Impala and the Chevy Chevelle against the Pontiac GTO, the Oldsmobile 4-4-2, the Shelby Ford Mustangs, the Dodge Charger and the Plymouth Cuda, among other high-performance cars. The 1964 Impala was only available in the Sport Coupe and the convertible. It was Chevrolets most expensive model after the Corvette, according to Oldrides.com. It came with a wide range of engine options and so many extra interior and exterior appointments that each vehicle could be mixed and matched, creating individual pieces of automotive art.
The SS models equipped with bucket seats accommodated five people, while standard Impalas with bench seating could seat six. The dimensions for the Impala SS were the same as the rest of the lineup: a 119-inch wheelbase, 209.9 inches in overall length and 79.65 inches in height. The 14-inch wheels carried 7.00x14 tires. The Sport Coupe had a curbside weight of 3,450 lbs. and the convertible weighed in at 3,555 lbs.
The 1964 Chevy Impala, depending on the options chosen by the buyer, oozed luxury. Choices included air conditioning, a dashboard-mounted tachometer for the V-8 versions, seatbelts, wire wheel covers, tilt steering wheel, tinted windows, grille guard, six-way power seats, positraction rear axle, power steering, extra padding in the seats, electric clock and more.
Under the Hood the Impala SS lived up to the Beach Boys fantasy of power and performance. The 409 just kept getting more horsepower after its debut in 1961. The 1964 SS had three horsepower ratings for the 409: 340, 400 and 425. The 400- and 425-hp V-8s generated 425 foot-pounds of torque, the thrusting power created by the engine to move the car from a dead stop lickety-split. The 425-hp 409 featured twin four-barrel carburetors, forged steel connecting rods, impact-extruded pistons, a five-main-bearing crankshaft and dual exhausts. The 409 Impala SS also received a heavy-duty clutch, radiator and suspension. Lesser V-8s on the Super Sport were the 170- and 195-hp 283 and the 250-hp 327.
