With trophies in trunk to prove it, this older restoration of one of
the original 1963 Studebaker Avanti R-1 (non-supercharged V-8)
cars designed for Studebaker by the team led by world-famous
industrial and automotive designer Raymond Loewy has won some
shows in its time and could do it again. Period-correct air
conditioning recently installed, using NOS components to maintain
totally stock appearance.
Among other things, the Avanti was the first American car to have
disc brakes, so its stopping power was very advanced. That was
good, because it was also a very fast car, particularly the
superchanged one that Andy Granetelli drove to a world land speed
record at Bonneville Salt Flats.
This specimen is red with red interior. There are a couple of minor
paint flaws, but the car looks great overall. The interior is believed
to be original, and looks close to new. No rips, no holes. The sun
visors have some surface crackling, which is not uncommon in
There is quite a bit of chrome plating in the engine compartment
and the sound of the big V8 is very much like that in an older
Ferrari or Corvette.
The Avanti was so advanced in design that many young people
today will mistake it for a contemporary exotic car. Real Avantis
(Studebaker made them only for a couple of years and then they
were reproduced by a succession of companies into the 1980s) are
relatively rare sights on the road. So this car is a guaranteed head-
