FOR SALE: 1949 Dodge Wayfarer
The 1949 Dodge Wayfarer roadster is an interesting footnote in automotive history, since it\'s quite possibly the last American convertible to use sidecurtains in place of roll-up windows. Today, they\'re highly sought collectables, and with just 5420 being built, finding one is a rare treat indeed. The idea was simple: offer a convertible at a deeply discounted price, while still offering comfort and luxury that the other low-priced guys couldn\'t match. The Dodge was a bit bigger than its corporate cousins at Plymouth, and rode on a slightly longer wheelbase, giving it a big car look and generous space inside. This handsome Island Green roadster wears a high-quality restoration befitting such a rare machine and perfectly embodies the transition from \'40s fat fenders to \'50s sleek. Paint quality is quite good, and with this being such an unusual model, you know all the sheetmetal is OEM and in great shape. There\'s also quite a bit of chrome and stainless, all of which has been restored for show, right down to the cool trunk latch with integrated brake light. The Wayfarer is strictly a 3-passenger vehicle, with a front seat and a parcel shelf in back. Neatly upholstered in dark tan leather, it looks incredibly inviting and makes you want to grab your fedora and your best girl and hit the road. You\'ll note that the matching door panels don\'t offer window cranks, although the rest of the interior is quite conventional. The instrument panel offers a full array of rebuilt gauges surrounding a square speedometer, along with accessories like an AM radio, spotlight, as well as a heater for those chilly summer evenings. The steering wheel has been beautifully re-cast in the original color with all the wonderful details nicely preserved. Overhead, the tan canvas top fits neatly and stows out of sight behind the seats in classic roadster fashion. And thanks to the wheelbase stretch and lack of a back seat, trunk space is cavernous, even with the full-sized spare tucked in there. Dodge\'s powertrain was the rugged and reliable 230 cubic inch inline-six making 103 horsepower linked to a traditional 3-speed on-the-tree. Between the two, performance is lively and outside of a bicycle, there aren\'t many more reliable ways to get around. It makes a great old car grumble, and the engine bay is nicely detailed with correct finishes and reproduction decals throughout. The chassis is also clean and brightly detailed to near show levels, and fans of the \'40s will often admit that the post-war Mopars are some of the best handling cars of the period. Ride quality is excellent, braking is impressive, and with sharp steering, the roadster is a playful companion on a twisty road. Four gorgeous chrome wire wheels have been fitted with new whitewall radials, and the original steel wheels are included. Rare, reliable, and a lot of fun to drive, this Wayfarer is the car to own if you\'re looking for the best combination of \'40s style and reliability. Call today!
