FOR SALE: 1939 Cadillac Fleetwood 9023 V16 7-Passenger Sedan

Stunning is the only way to describe a Cadillac V16! This car is #10 of 18 built for 1939! Superbly maintained with prior concours history!

With The Great Depression in the past and significant increases in sales of automobiles in 1936 and 1937, Cadillac decided to have another go at the extravagant full-size luxury car. Under the direction of stylist William J. Mitchell, the 1938 Cadillac V16 debuted with a slightly smaller but more efficient 431ci V16 that replaced the 250 pound heavier 452ci unit that powered the 1930-1937 cars. Updated sheet metal by Fleetwood complemented the substantial 141 ¼ inch wheelbase and 12 available body styles. Unfortunately for Cadillac and GM, another smaller recession has come into effect and V16 production slowly dwindled down to double digit numbers by the end of its life. All said and done, Cadillac built 4,403 V16 cars, of which roughly 2/3 were 1930 model year cars. The final 431ci iteration had a total production of 514 cars: 315 in 1938, 138 in 1939 and only 60 in its final year. The V16 died like a true hero, refusing to compromise and establishing Cadillac as a maker of the finest motor vehicles America had to offer. Today, these cars are hugely popular with collectors for their sheer opulence, limited production and role in American automobile history.

We are very excited to offer this 1939 Cadillac Series 9023 Fleetwood V16 7-Passenger Sedan! This V16 is finished in its original and correct shade of black over gray mohair interior and powered by its original 431ci motor! In addition to a host of standard features including split windshield and side-mount spares, this big sedan also has the following: two-tone wood trim throughout and simulated wood dash, heat/defrost, Cadillac pedal pads, rear grab handles, dome light, trunk light and much more! It rides on special V16 hubcaps with Denman 7.50-16 4-ply tires. This car exudes luxury even today; it must have been quite a sight in 1939!

This Cadillac was acquired by the previous collector/owner in February of 1991 and shortly thereafter had its big V16 completely disassembled and reconstructed. This process included the removal and rebuilding/replacing of the following: spark plugs, wires, fuel pumps, distributors, condensers, carburetors, heads, valves and lifters. We have documentation of this rebuild and the engine still feels fresh today! The brake system and many other components were also replaced as needed in the early 1990s. The car was an AACA National First Prize Winner in 1970 and a CCCA 1st prize winner at some point during its life. Today, it survives showing 72,904 miles, which we believe could be original to the chassis but have no way of verifying this. The car retains all safety-plate glass and has had a VDO water temp gauge added for superior temperature readings while touring. The car is in very sound condition, both mechanically and cosmetically, where it shows minor patina from an older repaint. The paint and chrome are both shiny and smooth to the touch. We encourage any and all questions on this magnificent V16; please don‴ hesitate to ask! Thanks for looking!
