Antique/Classic / Volo, Illinois
Trippe Safety Lights, Dual Sidemounts, Canvas Convertible Top, Dual Cowl Lamps, Steel Trunk and Trunk Rack . The Auburn Automobile Company is a marque synonymous with American Classic Cars. Best known for their iconic Boattail Speedster, Auburn nearly ceased business in 1924 due to lackluster sales despite their acclaim for performance. Industrialist E.L. Cord bought out the company with investment capital and quickly steering Auburn back to profits. Cord ordered the plant to refinish it's inventory of unsold bodies in a wide range of brighter and more colorful paint schemes. Not only were these new Auburns more colorful, they were also an incredible value. Business Week magazine exalted the Auburn, with the memorable bi-line "More car for the money than the public has ever seen". Visionary designer Al Leamy introduced new styling features in 1931 including an elegantly swept fender line, accentuated by a long hood. Along a new body style came the underlying chassis and frame, which featured a rigid X form cross member. This innocuous engineering feature allowed the body to be lowered by three inches, giving the 31' Auburns a swank and sporty lower profile. The Convertible Phaeton Sedan was among Auburn's most desirable body styles. The Auburn Phaetons featured exclusive options including roll-up windows and removable center pillars for a flush "all-weather" fit along the convertible top. With the center pillar removed, windows and top fully retracted, the passengers were treated to an unobstructed panorama of the swiftly passing countryside. Volo Classic Cars is pleased to offer this remarkably faithful example of an Auburn Phaeton Convertible Sedan clad in Cigarette Cream and Tobacco. This Auburn has been carefully maintained over 30 years since it's restoration. Canvas top show minor patina. Chrome, Upholstery and paint are in very good condition. Removable B Pillars have a tight fit and body is straight. Engine and drivetrain perform well, affording it's occupants a memorable driving experience. Youtube video available upon request.
